WCMX and Adaptive Skateboarding Webinar with the Great Lakes ADA Center
We recently had the honor of presenting an educational webinar hosted by the Great Lakes ADA Center as part of their ongoing commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and professional development. This session focused on introducing WCMX (Wheelchair Motocross) and Adaptive Skateboarding to a wide audience of professionals, program coordinators, and advocates working to expand adaptive recreation in their communities.
Our panel included:
- Andrew Garcia, Executive Director and Lead Coach at Ability Skateboarding
- Victor Nelson, Director of Operations at Action Park Alliance
- Antonio Torres-Vanga, Board Member of the World WCMX Federation
Together, we shared insights on the history and evolution of WCMX and adaptive skateboarding, covered the specialized equipment involved, and explored ways organizations can create safe and inclusive spaces for athletes of all abilities.
Throughout the presentation, we emphasized how these sports are about more than ramps and wheels—they are powerful tools for building confidence, promoting health, and strengthening communities. We also discussed practical strategies for program development, including collaborating with skateparks, sourcing adaptive equipment, and fostering an environment where new athletes feel welcome and supported.
One of the highlights of the session was engaging with participants during the Q&A. It was clear there is growing interest in bringing these adaptive action sports into more parks, recreation programs, and therapeutic settings across the country. The thoughtful questions and discussions were a reminder of how much potential there is to expand access and awareness.
We’re grateful to the team at the Great Lakes ADA Center for inviting us to share our experience and to everyone who attended for their dedication to learning and inclusion. It was a great opportunity to connect with so many people who care deeply about making recreation accessible to all.
